The Cairngorms National Park officially opened on the 1st of September 2003. It is Scotland's second national park, and the U.K's largest at 3800 square kilometres (1400 square miles). It has the largest area of arctic mountain landscape in the UK at its heart, with 48 peaks over 3,000ft and diverse communities around it.
The park is home to 16,000 people and 25% of Britain's threatened birds, animals, and plants.
It includes high moorlands, pristine forests, sparkling clean rivers and spectacular lochs and glens.
A quarter of Scotland's native woodland can be found here, with the biggest continuous stretches of near-natural vegetation anywhere in Britain.
Your holiday apartment in Ballater provides an ideal base for excursions into this fascinating wilderness area.
